Given all the snow today, just do the best you can with class tonight. While we would like to see everyone make it tonight, we realize many students travel from Ogden, Tooele, and Riverton (to name a few) and would rather have you stay home and safe if the roads are bad where you live. So, if you can’t make it, we will just look forward to seeing you on Thursday. Travel safe everyone.

Classes Resume Tuesday January 6th

I hope you all had a great holiday break and were able to spend time with your loved ones and enjoyed your time off.

As I’m sure you all remember, classes will resume once again tomorrow Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at their usually scheduled times. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone in class again tomorrow.

As always, there will be a lot of new things we will introduce this year that we’re excited to share. So don’t miss out as we’re going to kick off the New Year right! We have a ton of surprises that I think you’ll all enjoy.

New Policy: Martial Arts or Wrestling Shoes Only

In an effort to keep our carpet clean and in good order, effective February 1st, only wrestling shoes or martial arts shoes will be permitted in class and means no more running or cross trainer shoes. They were just tearing up the carpet and tracking in unnecessary dirt and grime.

Martial arts and wrestling shoes not only will be easier on the carpet, they also help you turn quicker and are less bulky causing less drag in your step.

NOTE: Please change into your martial arts shoes before entering class and do not wear them in from the outdoors.

I prefer wrestling shoes with the split heal and got them at Dick’s Sports for around $40. Here are examples of martial arts shoes you can purchase.

Marcy and I, as well as all of our instructors, want to wish everyone a happy New Year and thank everyone for their support of our martial arts school this past year.

It’s been a very eventful year moving from a fitness club to our very own new martial arts school this past November. I know it was the right decision and I’m definitely glad we did it!

Having our place allows us greater flexibility that we just didn’t have before. We’re incredibly excited about the New Year and all that we will be able to accomplish together.

As always, we have a lot planned for next year for our students and will have a lot of great announcements to make in the near future.

We’re also excited that we have a lot more room for new students this year than we did last year. Be sure to sign up for our email alerts to find out whenever we have openings available.

We’re all looking forward to kick starting things again on January 6th, 2009 at the same days and times. See you all there!

Last Class of 2008 is Tonight

I noticed a typo on my last blog post about our holiday schedule saying we weren’t having class tonight. Sorry about that! Here is the accurate holiday schedule:

Closed December 24- January 5th (Annual Holiday Break)
Classes resume on Tuesday January 6th at their usual time according to our schedule

Tonight is our last class of the year and I look forward to seeing you at your regularly scheduled class times!

Holiday Party and Donation Drive Recap

Thank you to everyone who came to the Christmas party last night. It was a great time filled with music, great conversations, friendship, good food, and giving to a great cause. It was good to meet everyone’s spouses and significant others and have them share in the evening.

A special thanks to my wife Marcy for all she did to prepare the studio and food. Also, special thanks to Shawn for helping to provide the chairs and tables and to George for hauling them to the studio.

Hopefully you all enjoyed the photos that Jess helped prepare for the studio and got a chance to see all the other old photos of my training over the years. We will be printing out more for the studio soon.

Also, I am extremely pleased with the donations for the YWCA that our studio was able to collect. We had well over $300 in clothing donations and $250 in cash to buy new items. I am happy to announce that the studio is matching the cash donations so that brings our total to $800.

We also held some drawings for everyone and another for those that donated. James and Emily really cleaned up this year. It must be good karma from donating so many items!

New Beginners Only Class Added to Our Schedule

In an effort to help our beginning students get the best start possible in the martial arts, we have added a new beginner’s only “basics class” to our class schedule at our Salt Lake City Utah Martial Arts School.

Effective Tuesday December 9th, 2008, this class will be available. This class is designed for those with little to no experience in the martial arts. Once a student completes the basics program, they will then advance to the 7:30pm-8:30pm yellow and orange belt class.

The new basics class for beginners will allow us to more thoroughly teach the fundamentals of the art of KENPO including: punching, striking, blocking, stances, kicking, footwork, concepts, principles, and more. It will also create some new openings in our classes for those interested in beginning their martial arts journey.

The basics class is exclusively for adult white belts (the first belt in the system) and will be held every Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30pm-7:30pm.

Be sure to sign up for our free trial program because it is the prerequisite for attending this class!
