Last night Alan Jacob - 6th degree AKKI black belt under Paul Mills - taught an AKKI Kenpo ground tactics class to our intermediate students and advanced students. Mr. Jacob is a good friend of mine and I really appreciate him taking the time to come in and share his knowledge on the subject.
What I like most about our ground curriculum is its strategy of not staying on the ground. We try and get back on our feet as quickly as efficiently as possible and have our opponent stay on the ground as long as possible. Mr. Jacob covered some of the AKKI’s techniques including “Twisted Thunder” and “Rolling Thunder.” These techniques focus on an attacker who is on top of you while your back is on the ground. He also demonstrated other AKKI Kenpo Techniques where your attacker is on your back.
He has taught many of these seminars at the Las Vegas AKKI International Camps over the years and shared the origins of AKKI Kenpo techniques and some ideas on where to find them in the stand up curriculum.
We will continue to teach and cover this material as time goes on. It’s an important part of training so you don’t panic if you ever find yourself on your back. The good news is that AKKI Kenpo techniques adapt so well to the ground, you just have to make the mental shift. See you in class on January 3rd after the holiday break!
